N Filmes is an independent production company founded in Recife in 2014 by filmmaker Alex Carvalho and entrepreneur Diana Sette. Mari Vianna joined in 2025 as Head of Development and Executive Producer.
Our first feature, The Salamander (2021), was co-produced with France, Belgium and Germany. It premiered in competition at Venice Critics’ Week, screened at the São Paulo International Film Festival and won the Audience Award for Best Brazilian Feature at Aruanda. The film received theatrical distribution in Brazil, France and German-speaking territories.
The Salamander received backing from Brazil’s Fundo Setorial do Audiovisual (FSA), Pernambuco’s Funcultura and Germany’s MFG Filmförderung Baden-Württemberg, with participation from Canal Brasil, Telecine, CANAL+ and Ciné+. Projeto Paradiso supported its international festival circulation.
We are currently developing Blecaute (Blackout), adapted from Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s novel, and The Raft, an original feature by Carvalho.
Alex Carvalho
Alex Carvalho is a Brazilian director working between London, São Paulo and Recife. He studied communication at Central Saint Martins and film at the National Film and Television School. His award-winning debut feature, The Salamander, had its international premiere at the Venice International Film Festival and its Brazilian premiere at the São Paulo International Film Festival. He is currently developing Blecaute, an adaptation of Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s novel.
Mari Vianna
Mari Vianna is Head of Development and Executive Producer at N Filmes, with over 20 years of experience in Brazilian and international production. Former Head of Entertainment at Conspiração Filmes and producer at Porta dos Fundos, she brings expertise in creative development and production strategy. Her credits include Sob Pressão, FIM, Netflix’s Anitta: Made in Honório, Black Mirror: Striking Vipers and Vitória, starring Fernanda Montenegro.
Diana Sette
Diana Sette is Managing Director and Producer at N Filmes, which she co-founded with filmmaker Alex Carvalho in Recife in 2014. She oversees the company’s management and production activities, working between Toronto and Recife.
